Understanding White Marks on Soy Candles
White marks on soy candles, often seen as tiny crystals on jar tops and sides, are known as 'frosting.' This is a typical trait of soy wax, akin to a frosted appearance on chocolate. It's not a defect, but rather a natural feature of soy wax that doesn't compromise the candle's quality or burning capacity.
Is My Soy Candle Frosty Because It's Drying Out?
No, frosting on a soy candle doesn't indicate it's drying out. This phenomenon is unique to soy candles and is often referred to as the "bloom." It's a sign of purity in soy candles, as many customers look for frosting to confirm their candle is made from pure, all-natural soy wax. Enjoying the unique experience of a soy candle includes appreciating this natural characteristic.
Impact of Frosting on Candle Performance
Frosting, caused by the crystallization of vegetable oils, might give your candle a dry look, but it's just the nature of the crystal structure and doesn't mean the candle is drying out. To reduce frosting, avoid placing your candle in direct sunlight or under fluorescent lights. Weather changes can also contribute to frosting, but it's almost impossible to prevent in soy wax.
Why Does My Candle Sweat?
The 'sweating' on the top of your candle happens when the fragrance oil in the 100% soy wax separates due to extreme temperature changes, often during shipping. This separation doesn't affect the candle's burning quality and usually resolves after the first use.
Optimal Burn Time for Soy Candles
Soy wax has a 'memory,' influencing how it melts during subsequent burns. To avoid "tunneling," where wax remains unburned along the container's sides, let your candle burn long enough to melt across to the container's edge on its first use. A general guideline is to burn your candle for 1 hour per inch of its width. For instance, a 3-inch wide candle should be burned for at least 3 hours to ensure a complete melt pool.
Cleaning Soy Wax Spills and Wick Maintenance
Soy wax can be easily cleaned with mild soap and warm water. Also, always trim the wick to 1/4" before lighting. Properly trimmed wicks reduce excessive flickering, smoke, and quick burning, extending your candle's life. Trimming prevents the wick from curling back into the wax and keeps foreign objects out of the wax, which can cause spluttering.
Understanding Bumpy or Uneven Surfaces After Burning
After burning, soy candles can sometimes cool with a rough, bumpy, or uneven surface. This is a common occurrence with soy wax and is caused by inconsistent cooling rates. While this might change the candle's appearance, it doesn't affect the quality, scent throw, or performance of your soy candle.
